What can patients expect from a complete physical?

In general, patients can expect to have Dr. Carruthers or a physician assistant take their vitals, which includes blood pressure, heart rate, respiration rate, and temperature. These measurements can provide evidence of health issues, such as high blood pressure or a rapid breathing or heart rate. Dr. Carruthers also uses a stethoscope to listen for signs of heart or lung problems. He also checks for any visible signs of health issues. Specific blood tests and a urinalysis differ between patients, depending on age and medical history. Patients of all ages should discuss any health concerns they have with Dr. Carruthers during their physical. We work to understand the individual needs of each patient and strive to improve their health and well being.

What should patients bring to their complete physical exam?

Patients who come in for their first complete physical should bring information on their medical history and fill forms that are needed for first-time visits. Other important information to provide includes medications (including supplements) that patients are currently taking.

What questions should I ask Dr. Carruthers at my annual exam?

Important questions to ask include:

• Are my signs within normal limits?
• What symptoms should I keep a lookout for at my age?
• What preventive measures do you suggest?
• What conditions am I at a higher risk of developing?
• Is my health better, worse, or the same since my last visit?
• What one change should I make to improve my health?

What happens if Dr. Carruthers finds a health problem?

If a complete physical reveals signs of a health problem, patients may need to return for additional testing. They’ll also meet with Dr. Carruthers to discuss their diagnosis and treatment options. Depending on the health problem in question, patients might need to come in for checkups more often, such as if they’re diagnosed with a chronic condition that needs careful monitoring.
